Weaned Child

Have you heard the cry of the child who is left by his mother?
Have you sensed his grief and anguish for feeling alone and abandoned?

This anguish is not the child’s alone.
There is anguish in every heart…
When things go out of control
When strength is drained by busyness
When the puzzle can’t be solved perfectly
When pressure overwhelms
When discontent and disappointments breed
When life demands too much
When everything doesn’t fall into place
When vanishing is the best thing that could happen
When negativity wins
When order and success lose

There is a cry in every heart, probably even louder than the child’s, when its object of security leaves it or has never even found it.
And the reason for the anguish is on every “when…” written or still not written above.

What is mother to a heart that would halt and even remove its anguish?

What is mother to the heart of David when he said:
“But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
Like a weaned child with its mother;
Like a weaned child is my soul within me.”
(Psalm 131: 2, ESV)

In another version, he says:
As a child lies quietly in its mother’s arms
So my heart is quiet within me.”
(Psalm 131: 2b, TEV)

He proclaimed the answer to Israel. He declared it to the world.

“O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forevermore.”
(Psalm 131:3 ESV)

Mother to hearts which like a child is weaned, mother to hearts which are calmed and quieted
is HOPE IN THE LORD.

Where does your hope lie?
Hope in your limited, feeble self and put more weight on your anguish.
Hope in the limitless possibilities, might and wisdom of your God and remain a weaned child.

Again, like David, declare in every “when…” of life:
“…I have calmed and quieted my soul,
Like a weaned child with its mother;
Like a weaned child is my soul within me.”
